Your travel planning should focus on the species allocation since these aren’t all alike, some partly regionally (within Costa Rica and also worldwide) limited. This occurs because the mountain ranges through the whole heartland (mountain and volcano ranges running from the land’s south to the northwest) build a geographic barrier. In the various altitudes – due to the different temperatures – there are again diverse species. The climatic conditions of both oceans also influence this. Based on the species allocation, Costa Rica is subdivided into the following ecological regions:

| 4. | Highlands |
| 5. | Central Valley |
The travel planning should thus be directed to these geographic regions. It’s recommended to visit at least three regions (the Central Valley is not included in the calculation).
